The Audi TT is a terrific sports car with sharp handling and a refined feeling throughout. It’s a small car with a small cockpit and a small trunk, but if your driving and/or commuting styles match up to this car, you will find it a very rewarding piece of equipment that still catches the eye of the beholder.
Audi’s TT sports car has aged surprisingly well since its 2000 model year U.S. debut and is still a head-turning design despite the influx of outlandishly styled models. A redesigned TT is on its way, however, and should hit U.S. dealerships next spring as a 2008 model.
Longer and wider than the first-generation TT, the 2008 TT Coupé uses Audi’s Aluminum Space Frame technology and is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a V-6. Redesigned TT roadsters debut later.
The Audi TT is a terrific sports car with sharp handling and a refined feeling throughout. The 2008 TT sports Audi’s new trapezoidal grille, which bisects the front bumper. The slit-like headlights and lower grille styling lend the TT a sinister appearance. Like the current TT, the 2008 version has a gracefully arching roofline. Wheels as large as 19 inches in diameter are available.
The TT’s body is 69 percent aluminum and 31 percent steel, with the steel pieces located at the back of the car for optimal weight distribution. The new TT Coupé also features one of the latest trends in sports cars: a powered spoiler that deploys when the car hits 75 mph.
The new 2008 Audi TT is longer by almost 5 inches and a bit wider and taller. Wheelbase and front/rear track dimensions have grown by about 2 inches. But because of the extensive aluminum content in the TT’s structure (69 percent by weight), torsional rigidity is up and overall curb weight is down.
As before, the TT relies on either a turbocharged four-cylinder or a normally aspirated V6 for power. The four-cylinder is Audi’s latest direct-injection mill, but the V6 is a carryover. A new suspension design and electric-assist steering rack with speed-sensitive assistance are said to improve handling precision. Audi is also offering new adaptive “magnetic ride” dampers that automatically adjust within milliseconds to improve both ride quality and handling.
With the previous TT’s interior and exterior designs being its most endearing aspects, Audi has logically chosen to keep the updates purely evolutionary, especially on the outside. The look is a little more masculine now and features Audi’s latest signature single-frame grille. A retractable rear spoiler rises at highway speed to reduce aerodynamic drag.
