2008 Acura MDX

acuramdx.jpgis making high-tech luxury it’s specialty, and this is best exemplified by its flagship, the MDX crossover SUV. From its introduction for model year 2001 the MDX has offered comfort and convenience, with power and handling abilities near the top of the midsize luxury crossover class. When the second generation debuted last year, the MDX became more of what it always has been, with more power and more technology for engine, chassis, safety, and entertainment in a slightly larger package that showcases the latest developments in Acura’s design language.

The old 3.5-liter V6 has been replaced by a new 3.7-liter V6, the largest and most powerful ever in an Acura. Its 300 horsepower bests the old model significantly, and makes it the most powerful six-cylinder SUV currently, yet it runs cleanly, rated LEV-2 by CARB and ULEV by the EPA. Power goes through a five-speed automatic with Sequential SportShift manual-mode shifting to all four wheels all of the time, with amounts varied in real time by the sophisticated electronic logic and controls of the SH-AWD(tm) all-wheel drive system.

The new 3.7-liter power plant still features VTEC variable valve timing and lift control to optimize horsepower and torque characteristics while promoting fuel economy. This time, however, a sky-high 11.0:1 compression ratio, electronic throttle, and variable intake and exhaust systems bring about a far more responsive engine in all rev ranges.

Behind the V6 is a new, strengthened and regeared five-speed automatic with grade-logic control and SportShift manual capability, and the combination makes the 4,500-pound MDX feel downright quick. The last time we tested an MDX was way back in 2003 when it was rated at just 240 hp. Even then, the MDX ran to 60 mph in about 8 seconds and we suspect the 2007 MDX will easily eclipse that modest performance. Towing capacity rises from 4,500 to 5,000 pounds.

The Acura MDX offers an outstanding V6 powertrain, seven-passenger seating and an all-wheel-drive system. Interesting styling, attention to detail, excellent crash protection and competitive pricing increase the appeal of this luxury SUV.

The new MDX’s exterior styling underwent a similarly rigorous workout. According to Frank Paluch, the chief engineer of both the original and second-generation MDX models, the goal was to provide a “stealth family package,” which the design team accomplished by lowering the visual center of the vehicle, what they call the C-line, and angling the D-pillar sharply forward to camouflage the third-row seating. Paluch adds, “The vehicle looks smaller, but it’s wider, longer, and lower.” Until we spend time behind the wheel, we cannot say if the MDX can hang with the fast crowd–but at least it’s wearing all the right clothes. Acura is being coy about powertrain performance, but Paluch says they have aimed for best-in-class V-6 performance. When asked if that translates to 300 hp, he remarks, “that’s a difficult goal.”
