2007 BMW M6 Convertible

bmw_m6_conv.jpgA new convertible version of BMW’s super-high-performance M6 coupe will hit showrooms this fall. Mechanically identical to the coupe, the convertible comes with a fully automatic, retractable, multilayered fabric top that keeps the cockpit well insulated from noise and the elements when the weather turns nasty.

Like the 650i convertible on which it’s based, the new BMW M6 convertible features a unique glass rear window that can be raised and lowered independently of the folding fabric top. When left up while the top is down, it serves as a wind blocker to quell cabin turbulence — or it can allow more ventilation when lowered while the top is up.

The BMW M6 Convertible is a unique performer featuring the internationally acclaimed engine of the year – the 5.0-liter V10 – which produces an awesome 500 bhp and maximum torque of 383 lb-ft. With a suspension developed for supreme dynamics and a Sequential M Gearbox (SMG) complete with Drivelogic, this ultimate power unit turns the latest product from BMW M into an open sports car able to accelerate to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.Measuring 190 inches in length, BMW M’s new high-performance convertible is about 2 inches longer than the BMW 6 Series Convertible due to its rear air dam, optimized for supreme aerodynamic performance.

The roof of the BMW M6 convertible is made of three layers. A special noise and heat insulating layer of polyurethane (PUR) foam comes between the rubberized outer layer and the interior roof lining. Thanks to its unique fin-roof look, the soft top boasts the same dynamic contours as the Coupe. The wide C-pillar is characterised by BMW’s famous Hofmeister ‘kick’.A vertically positioned rear window can be electrically adjusted to move up or down, regardless of whether the roof itself is open or closed. The roof itself can be opened or closed either by remote control or via a button on the instrument panel with the entire process either way taking less than 25 seconds.

The heart and soul of the BMW M6 is a brawny, 5.0-liter V10 that it shares with the M5 sedan. It’s mated to the industry’s first seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG), also found on the M5, which is essentially a manual transmission whose clutch is engaged automatically (there’s no clutch pedal). Gears are selected by tapping paddles behind the steering wheel or by using the stubby shift lever on the center console. An “automatic” mode shifts gears for the driver, approximating a traditional automatic transmission, though it isn’t as smooth in operation.

Standard Engine:

5.0L V10, 40 valve, 500 hp @ 7750 rpm

  • 7 speed manual transmission
  • 12 mpg city / 19 mpg hwy
  • Green Rating: Unavailable

2007 BMW M6 Coupe

bmw_m6.jpgThe BMW M6 Coupe has had a few high-tech changes, including some options, while a new convertible has been the biggest news for the M6 model. Minor changes to the M6 Coupe include a new Real Time Traffic Information feature that’s added to the standard navigation system. It’s able to warn of imminent back-ups down the road and suggest alternate routes; a four-year subscription to the service that provides this information is included.

The 2008 BMW M6 Coupe is the last word in performance and handling. The car has is the most valuable addition to the BMW line-up. The 2008 BMW M6 Coupe has got utility features such as automatic climate control with dual control and micron filter, steering wheel and outside mirror memory, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, Dakota leather upholstery, universal garage door opener, flat tire monitor, Park Distance Control, power tilt or telescopic leather-wrapped multi-functional wheel, Dynamic Driving Control, voice command system, 12-way power driver’s seat w 4-way power lumbar, heated windshield washer jets, AM/FM/CD with 8 speakers etc.

The M designation means the car has been tuned to create a higher-performance engine, with a sportier suspension and often a different transmission. In some cases, there are engines available in the M cars that you can’t get in the non-M versions of the same car.the hotted-up version of BMW’s stunning 6-Series Coupe. The M6 is powered by a V10 engine that develops 500 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, much more than the standard car. All this comes at a price, of course, but even the “normal” 6-Series is far from bottom-of-the-line.

The 2008 BMW M6 Coupe is equipped with 4.4-liter dohc 32v V8 engine phenomenal in churning out 325 horsepower at 6100 RPM and 330 pound-feet of torque at 3600 RPM. Six-speed automatic transmission system with Steptronic facility has made the powertrain even more prolific. Thanks to six-speed automatic transmission system, the 2008 BMW M6 Coupe churns out awesome fuel economy – 18 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on highways.

Standard Engine:

5.0L V10, 40 valve, 500 hp @ 7750 rpm

  • 7 speed manual transmission
  • 12 mpg city / 18 mpg hwy
  • Green Rating: Unavailable

Standard Features:

  • Passenger Airbag Cutoff Sensor
  • M Variable Locking Differential

2007 BMW M5

bmw_m5.jpgThe 2007 M5 is a 4-door, 5-passenger luxury sports sedan, available in one trim only, the Sedan.

Upon introduction, the M5 is equipped with a standard 5.0-liter, V10, 500-horsepower engine that achieves 12-mpg in the city and 18-mpg on the highway. A 7-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is optional.

Based on the regular 5 Series sedan, the M5 comes equipped with a 5.0-liter V10 that cranks out a dizzying 500 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 383 pound-feet of torque at 6,100 rpm, with a luscious 8,250-rpm redline. The engine takes the car from zero to 60 in 4.8 seconds. Two transmissions are available. A seven-speed sequential-shifting automated gearbox (SMG) offers 11 different settings that govern shift point, speed and clutch slip. A six-speed manual — a new option this year exclusive to cars imported to North America — may be had as a no-cost option, for drivers seeking the old-school thrills only a traditional manual transmission can deliver.

The 2007 BMW M5 chassis puts the emphasis on performance, but you won’t find high-tech aids like the active steering and run-flat tires seen in other 5 Series cars. Instead, it’s a purist’s setup with a precisely tuned, all-aluminum suspension and gargantuan brakes (14.7-inch discs in front). M5 buyers also get BMW’s Electronic Damping Control, which allows the driver to choose one of three suspension settings — Comfort, Normal and Sport. The ride, even in Comfort mode, is exceptionally well controlled. The Normal setting provides an aggressive ride and Sport is stiff enough to only be useful on a glass-smooth racetrack. In fact, the current “ring taxi” vehicle — the one that is used to give passengers a taste of high-speed thrills at Germany’s famed Nürburgring — is an M5.

The M5 would of course go a lot quicker but there is a gentleman’s agreement among German automakers to keep the speeds down to 155. Very thoughtful of them really. Looking at it from their point of view with cars as brilliant as the M5 or the S class Merc or the Audi A8, crawling along at 70 miles per hour would be very frustrating indeed.

For 2007, BMW M has introduced a 6-speed manual transmission for the M5. This no-cost optional transmission has been developed for and will be offered exclusively in the North American market. It is the perfect enhancement for those driving enthusiasts who want to enjoy the 500-horsepower V-10 engine with the level of driver-car interaction only a manual transmission can offer. Of course, as with any M car, the pedals are arranged to provide smooth and quick heel-and-toe downshifting.

The M5 equipped with the manual transmission features the same M Dynamic Mode (MDM) stability system as the Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) car. M Dynamic Mode enables enthusiastic track driving with greater longitudinal and lateral acceleration on dry road surfaces, however, with limited vehicle stability, corrections by the driver may be required. With the M Dynamic Mode activated, stabilizing interventions occur at a reduced level.
Standard Engine:

5.0L V10, 40 valve, 500 hp @ 7750 rpm

  • 7 speed manual (standard) or 6 speed manual transmission
  • 12 mpg city / 18 mpg hwy
  • Green Rating: 43

bmw_6serics_conv.jpgThe 2007 6 Series is a 2-door, 4-passenger luxury sports car, or convertible sports car, available in two trims, the 650i Coupe and the 650i Convertible. Upon introduction, the 650i Coupe is equipped with a standard 4.8-liter, V8, 360-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 24-mpg on the highway. The 650i Convertible is equipped with a standard 4.8-liter, V8, 360-horsepower engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 22-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard on both trims, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. The 2007 6 Series is a carryover from 2006.

At a time when the lids of many convertibles are hardening up in the form of folding metal or composite jobbies, the revised 6′s top stays soft. Suffice to say it works in the grimness of a central European autumn and if you want something more substantial there’s the considerably cheaper (but still prohibitively expensive) Coupe, which is to be relaunched alongside the ragtop.

The 650i is a quintessential German grand tourer, as relentlessly effective consuming freeway kilometres as it is comfortable and compliant when cruising a country road.

Really, the only time the softness of the top is apparent (and with us, it’s always up) is with wind noise that comes with the sort of speeds that would get you summarily executed in Australia.
