The 2008 Chevrolet Equinox gains a pair of new models, one bent toward luxury, the other for performance. This midsize crossover seats five and shares its basic design with the Pontiac Torrent and Suzuki XL7. Equinox LS and LT models are joined this year by the luxury-themed LTZ and high-performance Sport. All are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The LS, LT, and LTZ have a 185-hp 3.4-liter V6 engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Sports have a 264-hp 3.6-liter V6, 6-speed automatic transmission, firmer suspension tuning, and specific trim. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. Equinox’s rear seat slides fore and aft up to 8 inches to increase passenger or cargo space. A navigation system and remote engine start are available. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.
Sport delivers a performance-inspired appearance, with body colored front and rear fascias and a body color grille cross bar. The front and rear fascias have trapezoidal design cues; the front fascia uses silver-painted trapezoidal air inlets, while the rear fascia features dual chrome trapezoidal-shaped exhaust outlets.
The Equinox Sport?s performance-oriented look is enhanced by eliminating the roof rack, although it is offered as an option. Also, 18-inch flangeless, high-polished forged aluminum five-spoke wheels, mounted on P235/50R18 tires, complement an aggressive stance.
Inside, the Equinox Sport has standard all-Ebony trim and appointments all its own. New seats with bolsters that enhance lateral support during quick cornering maneuvers are standard, with perforated leather-covered versions available. It also has a leather-wrapped, four-spoke steering wheel and specific instruments, including a 140-mph speedometer. The shifter also is unique to the Equinox Sport, as it is a J-gate design that enables precise control of the six-speed transmission?s fully automatic or manual tap-up/tap-down features.
Standard features also include those for which the Equinox is already known and appreciated: five-passenger seating with a Multi-Flex, split-folding rear seat, flat-folding front passenger seat , power door locks with remote keyless entry, power windows, air conditioning, tilt steering, rear liftgate with defogger and washer/wiper, and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with six-speaker audio system. Get comfortable. There’s so much new and exciting with the 2008 Corvette that you’ll want to grab a hot drink, sidle up to your computer screen and absorb all the details.
The changes involve everything from an all-new, larger and more powerful V-8 engine to refinements in driving characteristics that solidify the Corvette’s position as the preeminent American sports car – and further the argument that it is one of the world’s best. There are also a host of exterior and interior refinements that raise the Corvette’s luxury status and enhance the feeling of craftsmanship.
Dramatic fender forms and exposed headlamps combine with the grille to create a strong visual identity for the Corvette, while the tapered rear deck and fascia improve high-speed performance. The lean rear design sports round taillamps and center-exit exhaust. The fixed Xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps provide superior lighting performance.
The 2008 Corvette Convertible features a power-operated soft top with the 3LT package; an easy-to-operate manual top is standard. Both configurations use a five-layer fabric that conceals the underlying structure for a good top-up appearance, plus it helps preserve the car’s excellent aerodynamics and reduces road noise.
Corvette’s interior is inspired by the car’s dual-cockpit heritage. High-quality materials, craftsmanship and functionality help deliver premium quality meant to enhance performance driving. The instrument panel and doors are covered with cast-skin foam-in-place trim that looks like a leather-wrapped, padded panel. It is warm and inviting and has double the life of conventional trim materials.
An AM/FM/XM radio with CD player and audio input jack is standard. An optional Bose audio system with an in-dash six-disc changer adds to the choices available to the audiophile owner. Steering-wheel mounted audio controls – introduced in ’07 – are included with the Bose premium system.
A full-function OnStar system is standard and an onboard navigation system with voice recognition is available. Using a 6.5-inch (165 mm) color touch-screen display, the DVD-based system contains all the map data for the 48 contiguous states and most of Canada on one disc.
Standard Engine:
6.2L V8, 16 valve, 430 hp @ 5900 rpm
6 speed manual (standard) or 6 speed automatic transmission
Standard Features:
Seat Mounted Front Side Airbags
All-Speed Traction Control
In-Glass Radio Antenna

For 2008, the Chevrolet Corvette will undergo what the professionals call a mid-cycle freshening. Usually that amounts to a facelift, but in this case the heartbeat of America gets a transplant, a brand new engine.
The new Corvette engine features a new cylinder block, new high-flow cylinder heads, a new valve train, and new intake and exhaust systems, among other changes. It’s rated at 430 horsepower, an increase of 9 percent over the 400 hp in the 2006 version, which was already an extremely quick and fast sports car.
Chevrolet says the 2008 Corvette can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds flat, it can cover the standing quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 117 mph, and tops out at 190 mph.
As before, the Corvette will be offered in coupe and convertible models, although the coupes are targa tops, with lightweight, easily removable top sections in either tinted clear plastic or body-color plastic.
The 2008 Corvette will have two new six-speed manual transmissions to choose from, one for street driving and one for weekend competitions. And a six-speed automatic transmission is available with a floor shifter and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The transmission software has been upgraded to provide faster, more positive upshifts and downshifts, blipping the throttle automatically on every downshift to match engine rpm to the selected gear.
Two suspensions are available: The F55 suspension features fast-acting magnetic shock absorbers that automatically adjust to road surfaces and vehicle conditions such as pitch, dive, roll and yaw, to keep the tires planted on the pavement. The Z51 suspension uses higher rate springs and shock absorbers, heavier anti-roll bars, Goodyear F1 Supercar EMT run-flat tires, and quicker steering. We’re guessing this will result in racier handling and a stiffer ride quality.
If all the 2008 Corvette offered was acceleration, braking and handling equal to high-dollar exotics, it would still be the darling of car buffs everywhere. But a surprising level of utility comes along for the ride, too. The Corvette offers a user-friendly cockpit, a massive amount of luggage space and a ride quality that’s comfortable enough for daily commuting and long freeway slogs.
The only quibbles we have with the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette are few and relatively minor. Although the base interior is better than years past, it’s still somewhat plain and has too much plastic trim for a car in this price range. Nor can the Corvette match the nimble handling of European models like the BMW M coupe and roadster. But for the majority of shoppers in this segment, those items will likely be minor issues. For the money, it doesn’t get any better than the Corvette.
Standard Engine:
6.2L V8, 16 valve, 430 hp @ 5900 rpm
6 speed manual (standard) or 6 speed automatic transmission
Standard Features for LT1:
Passenger Airbag Cutoff Sensor
All-Speed Traction Control
In-Glass Radio Antenna
Standard Features for LT2, LT3 and LT4:
Seat Mounted Front Side Airbags
All-Speed Traction Control
In-Glass Radio Antenna
