Sony Bravia KLV-V40A10

62.jpgThe Sony Bravia KLV-V40A10 is the 7th generation LCD panel from Sony featuring a 40 inch (102 cms) screen with a wide screen 16:9 aspect ratio. This panel features a screen resolution of 1366×768 making it a tad over 1 mega pixel ( 1,049,088 pixels). The V series also incorporates the Wide Color Gamut - CCFL technology that is supposed to emit deeper reds and greens for more accurate color reproduction. The V series panel has more connectors than the S series. For instance the High Speed USB port and HDMI input is available in the V series but not in the S series (except the 46″ S series). Also the V series has an extra component input as well. Non-availability of HDMI on the S series (except the 46″ S Series) is a deal breaker for me.The Sony Bravia V-Series is a breakthrough in the art of colour reproduction. Exclusive Sony Live Colour Creation technology opens up the spectrum of colours on the screen to breathtaking effect. Significant boosts in the range of red and green in the picture brings what you see closer to the true colours of nature than ever before. “Reds and greens are the most difficult colours to reproduce on LCD screens - and they are vital,” says Andreas Ditter, Director, TV Operations Europe. “The challenge in creating a picture that people instinctively see as realistic is how to reproduce true, lively reds and greens while faithfully reproducing what we call “memory colors,” like human skin tones. That’s why Live Colour Creation is such an important part of what makes the V-Series special.

The V series has more brightness at 500 cd/m2 as opposed to 480 cd/m2 for the S series. The V series also has more contrast at 1300:1 as opposed to 1000:1 for the S series.2 Tuner Picture And Picture (PAP) is available in the V series while a single tuner Picture In Picture (PIP) with Picture Freeze is available in the S series. The former allows you to watch two video sources at the same time while the latter allows you to freeze an image from the programme while the programme continues playing in a smaller screen. I am not sure this is such a big deal because I seriously doubt if I will be using this feature a lot.The V series also has powerful audio output 13Wx2 as compared to 10Wx2 for the S series. There is also a built in digital amplifier in the V series that is missing in the S series. This again is not a critical difference because I will hardly be using the TV speakers and will rely on my home theatre receiver to do this job.The V series has a cloth finish on the front speakers compared to a silver metal grille on the S series. In my opinion, the latter finish is more sleek as the cloth cover tends to gather dust over a period of time.

As for the rest of its specifications, the VA912’s 700:1 contrast ratio produced excellent black levels. It also clearly displayed dark grey shades on black backgrounds in the extreme greyscale tests, without drowning out those levels. Likewise, its 300cd/m² brightness level helped produce vibrant images and made this model a joy to use in our office environment.Usually, colour reproduction is sacrificed to provide a panel which is less susceptible to motion blur, and vice versa. Nevertheless, while our tests in DisplayMate turned up noticeable banding in the 256-level colour intensity ramp, the VA912 fared very well in the colour blending tests.Physically, the VA912 sits on a solid base that allows for easy tilting. Its bezel is just over 2cm thick across the top and along the sides and also has an external power supply. You may not want to use this screen for playing games though as its 20ms response time is slow and it did indeed produce very noticeable blurring in our motion blur test. The 20ms response time is odd, considering that the panel used in this screen is a 6-bit one, which means the screen can only produce 16.2 million colours (dithered).

ViewSonic VP2330wb

22.jpgViewSonic’s VP2330wb 23-inch wide-screen monitor is a well-rounded display with an unobtrusive, ergonomically impressive design. With both smooth physical adjustments and easy screen adjustments, this monitor would be a winner even without the full-featured software bundle of extra goodies. The only thing that might make you pause your hand on its way to your wallet is the price: $1099 on 8/17/06, a bit expensive at that time.At default settings, the VP2330 performed well in the PC World Test Center. Our jurors liked its clean text, and they approved of its graphics performance–but with a few caveats on the latter. We found its display of our test photos of a glazed fruit tart and of a group of people somewhat washed out. At time of scoring, it received a rating of Very Good for both text and graphics (several other monitors did as well, and the spread of the scores was very tight). It wasn’t so long ago that you could get gasps of amazement and envy from owning a 19-in TFT display. Nowadays the same monitor wouldn’t get a second glance: to impress people now you need something a bit bigger, and with prices continuing to fall on these big panels you could go for something like Viewsonic’s flagship VP2330wb, a 23-inch widescreen monitor and currently the company’s largest TFT - with an equally large price tag.

ViewSonic just released the VP2330wb LCD monitor featuring a 23″ color TFT active-matrix panel with WUXGA resolutions and an optimum resolution of 1920×1200. With a thin bezel that’s only 0.85″ wide, the VP2330wb is suitable for stacking and tiling to produce large display walls.Weighing only 17.3lb, the ViewSonic VP2330wb measures 21.3″ x 21.1″ x 11.6″ and has a typical power consumption of 70 watts. The VP2330wb is HDTV-720p compatible and has a 170-degree viewing angle, both horizontally and vertically. The ViewSonic VP2330wb display offers 250 cd/m² brightness and an 800:1 contrast ratio. Gray-to-gray response time is 8ms, and black-to-black is 16ms, which is fast for a display panel this large. The image was stable, with no sign of flicker.Connectivity options include both 15-pin D-dub and DVI-I connectors. Good USB connectivity is provided by one upstream and four downstream USB 2.0 ports. ViewSonic provides an external power adapter/transformer, rather than incorporating that into the display.Out of the box the VP2330wb comes with the contrast set at 70 percent and the brightnes at 100 percent, but these levels can be adjusted via the on-screen menu which, along with custom colour adjustments, has colour temperature adjustments too. But be warned: these are not particularly accurate, so you’re best advised to leave them alone and concentrate on the custom colour setup.
