The Mobile Memory Mouse has a right-handed shape, with grooves for both your thumb and ring finger on the sides. Behind the smooth-scrolling (no ratcheting, in other words) mouse wheel lies a battery life indicator light. It features left-and-right click buttons, plus two buttons for web navigation. You can also depress the mouse wheel for a click, and push the wheel left and right to scroll sideways.

The wireless transceiver is about the width of a stick of gum, shorter overall than the same, and about 1/4″ thick. It is revolutionary in two ways: It doubles as a 1GB flash memory stick, and it can connect to the mouse through a detachable wire in order to recharge the AAA battery. The wire is magnetically attached, so there are no mechanical parts to break or wear, but the contacts can become oxidized over time.

The included AAA battery is rechargeable and replaceable. It’s accessible through a panel in the bottom of the mouse, where the 2.4Ghz/Bluetooth mode switch and Bluetooth broadcast button are also hidden away. Flat against the bottom of the mouse in the center is an on/off switch.

With the Mobile Memory Mouse 8000, Microsoft attempts to cram in everything but the proverbial kitchen sink, providing 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth, a transceiver with 1GB of flash memory, and even a rechargeable battery. It’s an ambitious package that probably has more than you need, but it could come in handy in a crunch (no empty USB ports, sudden need to sneakernet a file from one machine to another, etc.).

The mouse is short but wide, 3.4 inches long and about 2.5 inches wide, making for a somewhat awkward fit for larger hands. The brushed-metal accents are a nice touch, but the mouse’s thickness (1.5 inches in the middle) makes it a tough fit for many of the smaller pockets in your laptop bag. Additionally, the USB receiver doesn’t snap into a slot on the bottom of the mouse, like on the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 7000 or the Kensington Ci75m Wireless Notebook Mouse, which means there are more parts to get lost in the bottom of your laptop bag.

Saitek GM3200

saitek-gm3200Don’t let the GM3200 Laser Mouse’s boring name fool you: This thing is chock-full of features that gamers look for in a mouse. Aside from its blistering fast resolution, it has, most importantly, a dedicated button for on-the-fly dpi switching that can toggle between 800, 1600, 2400, and 3200 modes. It contains seven buttons, three of them programmable, including a “Mode” button that lets you instantly switch between two pre-configured profiles. Its underbelly includes a laser eye, two weight cartridges with removable weights, and even a way to adjust friction.

The GM3200 includes an ambidextrous shape that won’t scare off lefties but is still slightly more favorable to righties. The mouse makes a statement in low-light environments with its blue LED backlighting and pulsating Saitek logo, which cycles through five different colors: red, green, blue, orange, and turquoise. We’ve named the Saitek Eclipse II “the Las Vegas of keyboards,” and now we feel that same moniker might fit the GM3200 in the mouse category.

When it comes to playing a FPS game or taking advantage of the UI elements of your operating system and programs, a standard mouse is what most people use. They have been around forever and, to most people, are nothing special. However, to the enthusiasts and gamers, a mouse can mean a lot. Factors like DPI, number of buttons and the ability to customize it, are meaningful terms that can make the difference in your mouse choice. Although those are all important, companies that produce mice don’t talk much about real world performance and comfort in a realistic way, and that is exactly what this review intends to do. Hopefully by reading this review, you will get a good idea of the real world performance that this mouse provides.

The Saitek GM3200 Laser Mouse is one of Saitek’s new high end gaming mice. Saitek claims that this is the first 3200 DPI mouse – a very impressive feat. The GM3200 also sports many features along the lines of user customization; for example, the weight of the mouse can be changed by adding or removing small weights and the amount of friction can be changed by flipping the feet of the mouse over. These features sound pretty exciting and will be looked at in-depth over the next couple of pages.
