The Canon Pixma MG8170 is by no means small. It weighs a massive 10.7kg and is slightly bigger than the size of the standard desktop printer. It comes in a glossy black design and looks quite stylish. However, as with all glossy designs, this one too attracted a lot of fingerprints and rubbing them off was a major problem. The inkjet printer cum copier cum scanner has a whole slew of panels that open out revealing the scanner and cartridge slot. The side panel includes the MS Duo, SD MS and Compact Flash card slots along with a USB slot underneath. The placement of the USB slot could have been better as devices larger in size might have a problem fitting in.

The top of the 8170 includes the LCD screen and the touch panel. The touch panel has the directional pad, home and return button, ‘+’ and ‘-’ button for choosing the number of prints, the print button – with colour and black printout option – and three buttons for selecting the menu. From the looks of it, this initially sounds a little confusing and might have a steep learning curve but with the initial few button presses, or rather ‘touches’, you’ll get the exact function of all the options that are on the touch panel. The back contains the power slot, printer slot and LAN port for network printer. Overall, the Pixma 8170 sports a neat design but the glossy exterior may spoil the look of the device in just a few days of usage.

MG8170 is a bulky printer with a black and shiny rectangular body. The top, which is the scanner lid, has a 3.5 inch LCD display supported by an extensive touch-based interface. The bright coloured display is adjustable and can be raised for convenient viewing. To control it you have several touch keys, which are purpose specific and glow to indicate what keys can be used for a particular task, saving you the exercise of searching for it. It saves a bit of power too. The interface registers slimmest of touches and responds fast.

The keys are big and are arranged like this: Three select keys under the display, followed by, On/Off switch, Home and back on the left side of a big OK key with cursor wheel. There is a paper tray in the front and a paper cassette at the backside.

Canon MG8170 is an inkjet which rolls out A4 to 4×6 size sheets in PDF and JPEG formats. Photo printing can be carried out directly from a USB flash drive and SD or micro SD cards. Speed definitely is not what one should expect from it, as it also takes some time to warm-up.

The four ink cartridges plug in behind a cover to the right of the paper trays, which is very convenient, and the bundled software, which includes Brother’s own multifunction software and a copy of Nuance PaperPort, installs easily. There are drivers for Windows and OS X and Brother is keen to point out that these work with Windows 7 and Snow Leopard. Of all the silly inkjet speed claims made by printer makers, Brother’s are the furthest from reality. OK, they may be for draft print, exclude processing time and use an idealised test document, but they bear so little relation to what you’ll see in typical use as to be worthless.

The DCP-J125 is one of the recently launched 2011 range, distinguished from earlier models by the ‘J’s in their model numbers. This one is at the bottom of the range, very much an entry-level machine, but it still offers a good range of the features, which has made these printers so popular.

With the same low-profile case and gently sloped top cover, the DCP-J125 uses rather less of the high-gloss black plastic that, to our way of thinking, is starting to look dated. There’s one band along the front of the flatbed scanner cover and a little in the surround to the colour LCD display, but otherwise it’s a more discreet, frosted black.

The flatbed scanner itself is a fairly conventional device, but the scanner lid is on extending hinges, so you can scan books as well as single sheets. Lift the whole scanner section and the USB socket is located near the front of the machine, so you have to feed the cable around inside.

The two-tone grey design is rather utilitarian and better suited to an office than the home. In order to connect your laptop using the USB port, you’ll need to open the machine itself, as the port is neatly hidden away. However, you’ll need to budget for a longer cable than normal, not supplied, as it runs the length of the printer before exiting out of the back.Rather than the paper tray being on the back of the printer, you’ll find it located at the front. Printed paper also comes out of the front, rather forcefully we found. Print noise is quite respectable – not as quiet as the Canon PIXMA iP3600, but certainly more so than the Lexmark S305 and Epson Stylus SX425W.

Installing the four colour ink cartridges couldn’t be easier, as you’ll find an access hatch on the front of the device. Once all four are inserted, the colour LCD display informs the user that it will take four minutes to align and configure the device.
